Stop The Stigma!
TRENDY TUESDAZE.
I am SUPER excited to be wearing shirts from The Outlet Project today because they are all about bringing awareness to mental health, depression and suicide to the community. We need more businesses, organizations and activists like this that are brown and black owned. Our beautiful brown and black communities are suffering in silence and we need to end the stigma NOW. There are so many people suffering with mental illnesses alone, or struggling with their mental health with no information on how to get better, or people having suicidal thoughts thinking no one understands what they are going through. Well I personally relate to all these topics so today’s Trendy Tuesdaze is a lot more than just an outfit to me.
SPEAK OUT.
LET SOMEONE KNOW.
YOU ARE NOT ALONE.
LET’S FIGHT THIS SHIT TOGETHER!
We ARE NOT our mental illness.
I am not Major Depressive Disorder.
I have been diagnosed.
Yet, my diagnosis does not define me nor control my life.
I see a therapist monthly.
It used to be weekly.
And I will never be ashamed of that.
And you shouldn’t either.
We must stand up for ourselves.
Fight against discrimination, prejudice and inequality.
Our mental illness does not mean that we do not matter.
We matter.
So let’s talk about it!
Not all people diagnosed with something are stuck in their room under the covers.
Some smile in your face everyday.
Understand that mental illness and mental health does not fit in a box.
Just stay compassionate and support no matter if they are happy or crying.
Our mental illness does not have to make us feel like our back is against the wall.
There is hope to have a fulfilling life.
Never let anyone tell you that life is impossible for you.
This shit is doable!
Depression won’t keep me from stopping and smelling the flowers.
Depression won’t keep me from laughing, enjoying life and being me fully.
Depression wont keep me nor stop me….EVER!

For the people that have never been diagnosed or cannot relate to the mental health community…..when I say stop the stigma, what do I mean? Well these are negative consequences of stigmatizing mental illnesses:
Lack of support and compassion from family, friends and co-workers
Some health insurance companies not covering mental illness treatments
Discrimination in the workplace, school and with housing applications
Fewer opportunities available if the mental illness is mentioned
Being bullied, harrassed, mocked and dealing with constant unequal treatment
Feeling like you cannot live a “normal” life or be successful
