June 19, 1865 was a special day. It was the day that the queens and kings that have been enslaved in Texas found out they had already been freed two years ago. I couldn’t even imagine what that day felt like for them. A day of joy and relief that they were totally unaware that the rest of the states have already felt. But they were finally free. And that is all that mattered. Hundreds and hundreds of years of being disrespected and never celebrated. Could you imagine your whole life being a slave? And then someone galloping into town to tell you you are free? Our generation has no idea what that would even feel like. SO yes, we will celebrate! We will remember. We will support, honor, and buy Black today! Why? Because if we were never freed, we would not be able to be any of those things I listed earlier. If you have seen the word ‘Free-ish” around social media or on shirts it is because, yes, there has been a tremendous struggle for us to be respected as fully equal and human. Still! In 2020. But despite the struggles, we have risen up and have reached a lot of dreams that our ancestors prayed for. We have a long way to go to reach equality in the system, but we know our power and worth, but today we celebrate the opportunity to be able to even fight for it. The best type of protest is to show them Black joy, Black celebration, and Black pride. So let us celebrate even during the hard times! Let us restore BLACK WEALTH!
