Unorthodox Words Sneak Peek.

As promised in the previous post, here is an excerpt from the poetry book, Unorthodox Words. This book is about any and everything that I felt contributed to my depression. And not being accepted as a gay black woman was tough for me. I hurt and love like everybody else. I work hard and cry like everybody else. Being black does not define me. Being gay does not define me. But those are titles that other people automatically define me as, and that is something we all have to grow and work through. Someone will always throw a title on you. They will try and put you in a box if they do not understand you. They will throw their own insecurities and fears at you in forms of hatred, discrimination and prejudice. My advice to you today my gullies is this: love everything about yourself and be confident in the things that people are intimidated by. They hate you because they fear you. You are something they are not, and that bothers them. Black History Month is an amazing thing for people that are not a minority. I say that because people of color do not need a month to remember who we are. We are reminded everyday. But it is NEEDED for others to learn about our accomplishments, our achievements, and our mark in the world because it is not spoken or taught about enough in school. As the poem above says, our color of brown is disapproved of. Why? Because our color is powerful. It is magical. It resembles perseverance and strength. We are different and people hate different. Why do people want a tan? Why do people want lip fillers, butt injections, and curves? If they hate us so much, why do people love hip-hop culture and slang? We have done nothing for them to hate us. So the answer to me is they want to be us, but they can’t, so they try to belittle us, degrade us, and make us less than. That is not okay. But we will rise up and never be ashamed of who we are. I am finally okay with being strange. This poem is for anyone that feels like a strange fruit that is shunned from society. You might not be black, but might have something different about you that society just can’t seem to get down with.

ADVICE:

STOP CARING WHAT OTHERS THINK ABOUT YOU!

I know we all want to belong. I have felt that most of my life. I felt homeless and lost even when I had a home.I felt that I did not fit in any community.

BUT…

guess what?

You belong to yourself.

You do not need anybody else to belong.

Strange or not, you are BEAUTIFUL!

honestly…fuck what anybody else thinks, ok?

COME BACK TOMORROW FOR THE NEXT SNEAK PEEK OF UNORTHODOX WORDS.
